Felidae (FEE-lə-dee), commonly called cats, is a family of mammals within the order Carnivora. An individual member is known as a felid (FEE-lid). Among all land-based carnivores, the 41 living cat species show the widest variety of fur patterns. Cats have claws that can be pulled back, slender but muscular bodies, and strong, flexible front limbs. Their teeth and facial muscles are built for a powerful bite. Every cat is an obligate carnivore, and most hunt alone, either ambushing or stalking their prey. Different wild cat species are suited to forests and savannas, dry areas, and a few to wetlands and mountains. Their activity times—nocturnal, crepuscular, or diurnal—depend on what prey they chase.

**Characteristics**

All cats share these features: They walk on their toes (digitigrade), with five toes on each front foot and four on each hind foot. Their curved claws are retractable, attached to the last toe bones by ligaments and tendons, and protected by skin sheaths—except in the cheetah (*Acinonyx*). The pads on both front and hind feet form compact, three-lobed cushions. Cats actively extend their claws by contracting toe muscles and passively pull them back. The dewclaws are broad but cannot be extended.

Their bodies are flexible and lithe, with muscular limbs. The skull is short, with a rounded profile and large eye sockets. They have 30 teeth, arranged as 3.1.3.1 / 3.1.2.1. The upper third premolar and lower first molar are adapted as carnassial teeth for tearing flesh. The canine teeth are large—extremely so in the extinct Machairodontinae. The lower carnassial is smaller than the upper and has a crown with two compressed, blade-like cusps. The tongue is covered with horn-like papillae that help rasp meat from prey and aid grooming. Eyes are relatively large and set to give binocular vision. Night vision is excellent thanks to a tapetum lucidum that reflects light inside the eyeball, giving cat eyes their characteristic shine. Cat eyes are about six times more sensitive to light than human eyes, and many species are at least partly nocturnal. The retina has many rod cells for detecting movement in dim light, plus cone cells for color vision during the day. Whiskers are well-developed and highly sensitive above the eyes, on the cheeks, and on the muzzle—but not below the chin. They help cats navigate in the dark and capture prey. The external ears are large, especially in smaller species, and are tuned to high-frequency sounds, helping them locate small rodents.

The penis is subconical, pointing downward when not erect and backward during urination. The baculum (penis bone) is small or vestigial, shorter than in dogs. Most cats have penile spines that induce ovulation during mating. They have a vomeronasal organ in the roof of the mouth, used to “taste” the air—this is linked to the flehmen response. Cats cannot taste sweetness because they lack the sweet taste receptor.

Vocalizations are broadly similar across species but vary in pitch: larger cats produce deeper sounds, with the overall frequency range from 50 to 10,000 hertz. Common sounds include mewing, chuffing, spitting, hissing, snarling, and growling. Mewing and chuffing are contact calls; the others signal aggression. Cats can purr during both inhaling and exhaling, though pantherine cats seem to purr only during oestrus, copulation, or when cubs suckle. Purring is a low-pitch sound (16.8–27.5 Hz) often mixed with other vocalizations during exhalation. The ability to roar comes from an elongated, specially adapted larynx and hyoid apparatus. Only lions, leopards, tigers, and jaguars can truly roar, though snow leopards produce loud mews with a similar but less structured sound. Clouded leopards (*Neofelis*) can neither purr nor roar, making them a sister group to *Panthera*. Saber-toothed cats may have been able to both roar and purr.
